Set Me Free

Book Two – The Fugitives

my thoughts

Set Me FreeLucy Tate has spent the last 5 years on the run. That is, until she met Zach, the one guy she couldn’t bear to leave even though it could cost both of them their lives.

Hunted by a crooked FBI agent who killed her parents, Lucy has taken on one disguise after the next. But Zach knows exactly who she is and in spite of mounting evidence indicating her guilt in her parents’ death, he knows she’s innocent.

Convinced that it’s time to put her years on the run behind her, Zach and Lucy vow to fight back, clear her name, and take down the real killer.

With support from Zach’s loyal friends and his uncle, an investigative reporter, they set out on a dangerous mission hoping that the truth…will set them free.

my thoughts

Wow! This conclusion to Lucy’s story had me on the edge. It was full of pulse stopping scenes that I was both scared and excited about how it will all end for Lucy. At every turn of the page, the tension grew more and more that I didn’t even notice I was holding my breath. I immensely enjoyed the book from start to finish.

I must say though that there was something I was looking for when it ended or during that part when Lucy and Tenner met again. During book one, I never really questioned why Tenner was on the hunt for Lucy. I just thought that she’s just a loose end to the whole thing that’s why he wanted her dead. Melissa was smooth that way. But then in this second book as the characters raised that question, I was like, ‘yes why indeed. Maybe there’s another reason for it’. Like Lucy was probably the key to something that will really end it for Tenner. But that confrontation didn’t even came. The scene was fast that it was over before I could even react. I don’t know if I’ll be disappointed or be happy that it finally ended well for Lucy.

Other than that, every bit of the book was spectacular. As this is a New Adult which is not usually my genre, I’d say I enjoyed it pretty well. I love that Melissa put that year apart with Zach and  Lucy letting them grow in their own feet. Plus that meant that they went a year older before the book concluded. As always, I find it awkward to read about teenagers or barely adult talking about love in that serious sense. I mean, it always make think ‘if I were seventeen what will I do’. So the added year in the story was totally a plus for me. I also love that this didn’t happen in a short span of time. The time from when Lucy met Zach till it end was long, enough to give me a sense that they really do know that what they feel for each other is real and permanent even if they’re young.

Two thumbs up to Melissa Pearl for this novel. She’s now on my list of author to watch for from this day on.

My Thoughts

This is my first time to read a novel of Melissa Pearl. At first I was confused with the jumping timeline but after a while, I got the hang of it and when I did, I started to enjoy reading the book.

Reading this book was an enjoyable experience for me. I liked that the characters didn’t react on matters the way I expected them too. Though I think the characters are too young to talk about love in a very serious manner, I felt that this was a great plot once I get past the awkwardness of thinking about their age. Not that I think young love does not exist, it’s just that I believe that a happy ever after is easier to believe when they are adult and more settled with what they really what to do with their life.

Nonetheless, I immensely enjoyed the strength of Zach and Lucy’s characters. I also fell in love with Zach’s circle of friends. As always, I love reading about great stories of friendships. That’s why among the characters, I find Elliot’s character dearest to me.

I am looking forward to reading more about Uncle Alex and whether he would be the person to help Lucy attain justice. And of course, the ending was so much of a cliff hanger I can’t wait to read the next book. I didn’t expect I’d enjoy reading I Know Lucy this much but by the time Zach made that confrontation with Lucy and when Lucy discovered Zach has broken his promise, I find myself totally hooked.

So far this book was fun, thrilling and heart touching. I can’t wait to read the next one and get to know Lucy more.

ZACH…

“This is different, you guys.” I shook my head. “I mean yes, she is gorgeous. And yes, I’m attracted to her, but it’s not just her looks. There’s something about her. She’s intriguing. It’s like she’s not all she appears to be or something.”

“You can tell that after two minutes of interacting with her? Give me a break.” Elliot balled up his napkin and threw it on the table.

“I know I don’t know her at all yet, but I can tell there’s something more there.” I rubbed my bottom lip.

“She looks normal to me.” AJ shrugged.

“I think she’s pretty. She looks sweet, but…” Liesl turned to spy her quickly. “AJ’s right. She looks like any other transfer student. What makes her so different?”

“It’s something about her eyes. There’s a story in them. I can’t even explain why I think that. I just feel like she’s got a lot of layers and I want to peel back every single one of them.”

“I bet you do.” Elliot raised his eyebrows.

“Not like that.” I threw him a droll look. “I just want to solve the mystery that is Danielle Harrison.”

“Dude, there is no mystery.” Elliot slapped his hand lightly on the table.

“Yes there is. I can feel it.”

“Careful, Zachy, your Nancy Drew is showing.” Jaeda’s green eyes were large and round as she gave me a playful look.

“I don’t care.” I shrugged, confident in the truth that I really didn’t. “That girl over there has secrets and I’m gonna figure out what they are.”
